The Eastern Panhandle Region, bordered by the Shenandoah River and the Potomac River, is West Virginia’s Eastern Gateway.
Operating since 1983, Thomas Shepherd Inn is a SELECT REGISTRY Inn with six guest rooms. The first floor has a large living room, two dining rooms, a powder room, the kitchen and the spacious innkeepers’ quarters, with a bedroom, a bathroom, a sitting room, an office, and a spacious hallway.
The second floor has six beautifully appointed bedrooms, each having a private bathroom. Additionally, there is a library and a sitting porch overlooking the rear yard. The owners have recently purchased the property next door and it will be available separately from the Inn.
There is a full basement housing the laundry, utilities, workshop, and abundant storage. The house has central heat and A/C (upstairs and downstairs zoned).
A charming yet sophisticated town, Shepherdstown is centrally located just minutes from Harpers Ferry, Antietam Battlefield, the Appalachian Trail, Charles Town, and Leesburg, VA. Outdoor activities range from golfing to whitewater rafting on the Shenandoah River to hiking and biking on the C&O Canal towpath. The Charles Town Races, which originally was a colonial horseracing track, is now a casino as well as continuing its racing tradition.
Shepherdstown was once proposed as the site for our nation’s capital. It is home to Shepherd University and is a bustling community with galleries, a wide range of restaurants, trendy shops, and a small independent movie theater. Music, film, and art festivals are held throughout the year.
Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia. Named for Thomas Shepherd, it flourished during the Revolutionary War as a commercial center. The famed “Bee Line March to Cambridge” began here, with soldiers traveling 600 miles to join Washington’s Continental Army in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
During the Civil War, Shepherdstown served as an open-air hospital after the Battle of Antietam. Thousands of casualties lined the streets and yards. The Battle of Shepherdstown was the last battle of the Maryland Campaign.
